Insert key on Surface Pro Type Keyboard

I have used a Surface Pro with Typecover for two weeks but can’t find a Insert key on my keyboard to over-ride typing words. While I am experimenting Windows 8, some applications require Insert Key functionality to move to the next line, such as AccPac or the latest NY Times browser based crossword puzzle. However, the INS key is not available on the Touch cover. Is there a solution for the tablet?

Actually, the Surface Pro/RT is different. There is no a physical “Insert” key on the Type keyboard and also no a keyboard combination for .

KeyTweak is a simple but powerful tool that lets you reconfigure your keyboard in Windows. It features Remapping, Keyboard Control, Specialty Buttons, Pending Changes and Half/Full Teaching Mode Buttons. Download the installation binary from the website, and double-click the file to install it. I start the app and go to remap the F11 key to function as the insert key. Works forr me.

  1. A major MS Surface Pro type cover keyboard design flaw surfaces

I called MS support about remapping the Surface Pro’s MS type cover to create a direct Fn key press without using e.g., Fn + F10 ; many of my programs don’t play well with this keyboard. MS’s rep told me that it was designed as a tablet style keyboard “only” and to basically go away if I did not like it. That it is up to me to find a replacement bluetooth keyboard. A quick look hasn’t revealed any replacement surface pro keyboards that magnetically dock like MS’s does and has a Fn mapping that is really needed. I reminded her that MS wants us to think that the Surface Pro can be a real desktop/tablet replacement, but their “taught out” designed flaw throws a whole monkey wrench into their marketing plan.

  2. You can remap an unused key using a registry patch. Here is a patch that turns F12 into Insert.

Copy the text below the line into a text file, save it with the extension *.reg, and run the patch (with administrative privileges). Then reboot for the remapping to take effect.
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
    ;F12 (0058) to Insert (e052)
    “Scancode Map”=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,52,e0,58,00,00,00,00,00

    ;Key mappings off
    ;”Scancode Map”=-
