Black screen after wake up from sleep mode

My Surface RT tablet seems to be not working since now. When I attempt to wake it up from sleep mode, a black screen just shows and nothing happens. Then I have to restart the Surface every time and login my account again. I find that a solution is to download and install the latest drivers for the display adapter from Windows Update control panel. I have done that but get the following error message:

“Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We’re just collecting some error info, and then we’ll restart for you.
if you’d like to know more, you can search online later for this error: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE”

To fix the issues, open Control Panel, click Device Manager > Network Adapters > Marvell AVASTAR Wireless-N Network Controller (SDIO) Properties > Power Management and check “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”. Works for me.

  1. I have the same issue on the Surface RT. Hopefully this has solved the issue of it turning off after going into sleep mode, and also turning itself back on again after I gave the command to shut down. If only this forum had come up when I first searched the error message, it would have saved me a whole loads of time.

    • My Surface RT is having the same issue where it won’t wake up from sleep mode and I have to hold down the power button to restart it.
As AnthonyB and Edward I don’t have a Power Management tab under the properties for my Marvell network card :(

  2. My mom bought the surface 3 not the pro but we are having a screen problem it will not wake up, it stays on, but the picture is black we bought it at best buy only had it for 12 days when this happened. So we went back and they gave us a brand new computer. We had it 2 days since we got the new one and in the middle of watching a video it went black again, so it was on, but was just dark, we tried everything to get it to work again pressedvthe buttons, two at the same time etc… . So now were going back to Best Buy because it’s brand new and should not have this poblem.

  3. Hi guys, I discovered a solution (not a permanent one!) but saves me restarting every time. I have 2 surface rt at home, both had the same issue. What I do after it goes to sleep and I cannot ”wake it up”, I disconnect any wires and the keyboard and flip it around, rotate it a few times to make the screen adjust, then connect it to the keyboard again press the start button and it works. The first time you might need to try it a few times, maybe press the volume button but don’t quit. It worked on both my tablets!! Now it hardly ever does itg, maybe once or twice per week, before it was every single time it would go to sleep. Hope this helps someone. Good luck :)

  4. press ctrl alt delete… if you can see the volume go up and down. also if it vibrates when you press the windows button… the screen should pop back up after doing that. it has happened to me a couple times.

  5. I have a Surface Pro 3, which often stays with a black screen when I power on. (I can tell the backlight for the screen is on, because it glows slightly, but the image it is showing is a black screen.)

I find I can get the login screen if I press the power button at the top and the Windows capacitive button on the right side of the screen simultaneously. Takes a couple tries, but then I get the logon screen.

Because it is so easy to bypass, I have not bothered trying to update my drivers or changing the settings.

  6. How can I access the control panel, when it goes to a black screen immediately after opening? The device turns on to my lock-screen, swipes up to my log-in, then goes to an active black screen. I can see it reacting to my touch, but it just stays black.

  7. I had this same issue (I know, why am I still using an old Surface RT…) but didn’t have the power management tabs. So instead I went under the advanced tabs and disabled wake on pattern match. This seemed to crap out my wifi adapter, so I uninstalled and reinstalled it, tried again, rebooted, and now I THINK I man have fixed the problem with black screen on waking from sleep. Another note, I believe you can tell it’s a black screen on wake, and not a failure to wake, because when you tap the windows button at the bottom of the tablet, it vibrates.
